I used to be a runner.  I was even captain of my high school’s cross-country team.  Like most people out there, I was convinced that running and other cardio training was the best calorie burn one could get.  You couldn’t get any better than that.

I’ve always been pretty thin.  All throughout high school I was never above 155 pounds.  I attributed it all to running.

Then, it started happening…

All those years of running were taking a toll on my growing body.  I sprained my ankle three times.  I got shin splints (painful little micro-fractures in your tibia).  I twisted my knee.  I get both tendinitis and bursitis.  I was either walking on crutches or limping my entire senior year of high school.

 

I had to quit running when I started college.  I started to feel pretty good.  My legs stopped hurting, and I wasn’t gaining any weight.  I figured, “Hey, I don’t need to do anything, I’ll stay like this forever.  I’ve already found the best calorie burn, myself!”

As you can imagine, things got worse…

The fattening college food and beer binges began to take its toll.  I started to gain weight.

10 pounds…

 

20 pounds…

 

30 pounds…

 

 

By the time I graduated college, I had gained 80 pounds!  For a 5’ 7” guy, that’s pretty big.  Even worse, my weight gain really started to affect my health.  I developed asthma.  I even had heart palpitations.  I ended up in the doctor’s office more than a few times because I just couldn’t breathe.

So there I was, 27 years old and feeling like I was 50.  I was miserable, and I didn’t want to take it anymore.  That’s when I decided to finally do something about it.

I decided to start right where I had left off.  I bought a pair of running shoes and started running again.  Everything was going pretty well…for the first 2 weeks.

WHAM!  Every cross-country injury I ever had came back to me.  The ankles, the shin splints, the knees, all started aching even worse than I remembered.  And with an extra 50 pounds on my frame and an asthma problem, my body just couldn’t take it.  Running couldn’t possibly be the best calorie burn, could it?

I was at a loss, if I couldn’t run, what other calorie burning exercise was there?
